LOG ENTRY 001
So… Where the Hell Did Terra Nueva Come From?
Dundee, Scotland
One thing I’ve discovered over the last few weeks is that people are fascinated by the name Terra Nueva.
Most people assume I’ve sat in some trendy office with a branding agency, drinking artisan coffee while someone charged me an eye-watering amount of money to come up with two words.
I wish!
The truth is a lot less glamorous.
To explain where Terra Nueva came from, I’ve got to drag you back over forty years.
Now that’s a sentence that makes me feel old… Back then, I was in a band called December Rose. Like every band at that age, we thought we were going to change the world. To be fair…I still think that. The only difference now is I’ve got a few more wrinkles and a lot less hair. Instead of writing a normal album, we decided we’d write a concept album. No idea why.Probably because nobody had told us we couldn’t. It was called Leaving Home.
Funnily enough…It wasn’t about leaving home at all. It was about leaving Earth. We imagined a future where humanity had completely made a mess of things. The planet was struggling. Resources were disappearing. The only option left was to find another world. Like any good story, that world needed a name. After throwing ideas around for what felt like forever, we came up with:
Terra Nueva - A Brand New World.
Simple.Hopeful.Optimistic.Job done. Or so I thought.
Because life has a habit of taking you in directions you never expected, the band inevitably split up, and we all went our separate ways. I somehow ended up travelling all over the place.Tour managing bands around the World, along with owning music venues, then working in Movies and with F1 Grand Prix teams…basically living the dream!
If I’m honest, I don’t think anyone could have predicted where life would end up taking me. But every now and again…Usually driving home after another show somewhere, Terra Nueva would pop back into my head.
Not as a company. Not as a business.Just…An idea.
Almost like an old mate tapping you on the shoulder saying…“Don’t forget about me.”
Then something strange happened. The world started catching up. When we first imagined Terra Nueva, there was no livestreaming, no smartphones, no virtual production, no AI, no digital twins. No global communities!
Today…
They’re all becoming part of everyday life. And suddenly. That crazy idea from the 1980s doesn’t seem quite so crazy anymore.
In fact…It feels like it’s arrived exactly when it was supposed to. People often ask me when I came up with Terra Nueva. The answer is…Forty years ago.
People ask me when I started building it. The answer is…Now!
Funny old world, isn’t it?
Anyway…
That’s enough rambling for one journal.
Next time, I’ll tell you about the moment I discovered that Dundee once built a ship called Terra Nova.
I honestly just stood there smiling.
Some coincidences are almost too good to be true.
End Log.
The journey continues…
