The People Who Opened Doors
No one reaches a destination alone.
One of the greatest myths in life is that successful people are self-made. I don't believe that for a second. Every one of us can probably look back and point to a handful of moments where someone else changed the direction of our lives. Sometimes they knew they were doing it. Most of the time...They probably didn't.
As I've reflected on these Journals, I've realised that my life hasn't really been shaped by places. It's been shaped by people. People who took a chance on me. People who introduced me to someone else. People who answered the phone. People who listened. People who challenged me. People who said..."Let's have a coffee."
Those small moments rarely feel significant at the time. Looking back...They changed everything.
One lesson I've learned over the years is that opportunities almost never arrive on their own. They usually arrive disguised as conversations. A chance meeting. An unexpected introduction. A recommendation. An invitation. A simple question."Would you be interested in...?"
How many times have our lives changed because we answered "yes" to one of those questions? I've also learned that there's a big difference between opening a door and carrying someone through it. Nobody can do the walking for you. People can introduce you. Encourage you. Believe in you. Challenge you. But eventually...YOU have to decide whether you're prepared to step through that doorway yourself.
Some of the biggest opportunities in my life began exactly like that, not with certainty but with courage. I've been incredibly fortunate throughout my career. People have trusted me long before I'd earned the right to expect that trust. Sometimes they saw potential I couldn't yet see in myself. Sometimes they simply gave me an opportunity because someone else had spoken kindly about me. That carries a responsibility. When somebody opens a door for you... You try your very best to justify the faith they've shown.
As I've grown older, something has changed. I still appreciate every door that's opened for me. But I've discovered something even more rewarding. Opening doors for other people. Introducing musicians to promoters. Connecting businesses. Bringing creative people together. Watching opportunities appear because two people who should have met... Finally did.
There is a quiet satisfaction in standing back and watching someone else's journey begin. Perhaps that's why Terra Nueva feels so different to anything I've done before. It isn't built around one person. Or one company. Or one industry. It's built around connections. The idea that extraordinary things happen when good people meet one another. Not by accident. By design.
I've often said that relationships are the most valuable currency we have. Not because they help us get ahead. Because they remind us that none of us achieves anything worthwhile in isolation. Every success I've ever enjoyed has somebody else's fingerprints on it somewhere. Teachers. Friends. Colleagues. Clients. Artists. Crew. People who believed in me. People who challenged me. People who occasionally told me I was completely mad...before helping me anyway.
Looking back...
I'm grateful for every single one of them. I've also learned that belief has a remarkable ripple effect. One person believes in you. That gives you the confidence to believe in yourself. Then one day...Without even noticing... You become the person opening doors for somebody else.
Perhaps that's how communities are really built. Not through grand gestures. But through countless small acts of generosity that quietly pass from one person to another. If Terra Nueva succeeds... It won't be because I had the best idea. It will be because enough people chose to share it. That's a very different thing. Ideas belong to individuals. Movements belong to communities.
I've reached the point where I no longer measure success by what I achieve. I measure it by how many opportunities we create for other people. If Terra Nueva helps one young musician find a stage...One filmmaker find an audience...One game developer find a collaborator...One local business find a partner...Then every difficult day will have been worthwhile.
As I look ahead, I know there are still countless doors waiting to be opened. Some for me. Many, I hope, for others. If I've learned anything over the past forty years...It's that the most important door you'll ever walk through...It may well be the one someone else quietly opens for you.
And one day...Without even realising it...You'll hold that door open for someone else.
The journey continues... 🌍
